Important Information Concerning Botox Therapy
Botox is rapidly becoming a must in Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming an important part of any beauty routine for people in Sydney. All the same I am often amazed when I listen to the various half truths that surround this procedure. I have included below some of the popular errors which I hear day in day out at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I am employed as a doctor.
Delusion Number 1: I will lose my facial expressions!
Research has found there are 60 or so muscles in the human face. The excessive use of these muscles can result in wrinkles. The overuse of Botulinum Toxin can lead to the musculature of the face looking slightly less expressive. Broadly speaking physicians use relatively low amounts to make you look ‘refreshed’, but still you will of course maintain your facial expression.
Indeed the correct amount of Botox in the appropriate place means an expressive face is preserved whilst any lines are softened.
Delusion Number 2: Botox is a poison!
This to a small extent is correct. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the exact pharmacological terminology. An overdose can loosen facial muscles that you do not want relaxed or may cause illness.
Pharmacists have an old phrase ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. Every medicinal drug in a big enough dosage may make you ill. If you drink too great a quantity of water it will kill you.
Delusion Number 3: Wrinkle injections hurt!
The needles used at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than a human hair. Several people liken the treatments to a mosquito bite. It is certainly not as traumatic as a procedure like a blood profile.
Delusion Number 4: Botox will deaden my face!
This is totally incorrect. Botox affects the neuromuscular junction, and not on the nerves of sensation. Botox only affects the ability to relax muscular tissues.

Delusion Number 5. You can’t stop getting Botox or else you may wrinkle faster than before!
Also wrong.
The first Botox treatment will last around 3 months. Any injections after the initial one normally last a few weeks longer. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again the lines will eventually re-emerge. However they will certainly be no more noticeable than previously.
Even if you never had Botox injections ever again - those lines should be less pronounced than if you had not been treated. Principally because you have allowed your skin to have a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
