Many headed directly to men’s clothing when the department store doors burst open at 5am yesterday, the dedicated bargain hunters rushed past the traditional refrigerator, washing machine and television sale items.

David Jones and Myer both reported an increase in the sale of gift vouchers this year, many of which were redeemed yesterday. Myer introduced increased security - an extra 100 officers in the Sydney city store - to regulate the flow of shopper traffic at store entry points and on escalators during the busiest morning hours yesterday.
The lines outside the store had dissipated by lunch time. Among the longest queues inside was the one to the women’s underwear counter, which offered 30 per cent reductions on all stock.
Mr Favaloro said the day was incident free, apart from the odd tussle in the shoe department. He saw a few customers in ladies’ shoes trying to sort out who had what size at what time.
Cate Daniels, the group general manager of operations at David Jones, said shoppers had camped outside the store from 5pm the night before waiting to hunt for discounted designer labels.
She said she thinks the door-buster whitegoods sales are gone. It is all about designer brands now. The Burberry boutique was filled with 20 or 30 people at 5am. By 11am, most of the Burberry sale items had vanished.
Gabriella Cheou, of Riverwood, was planning to spend up to $1000 on three handbags, discounted by up to 40 per cent.
Jelena Komcar, from North Strathfield, said she was searching for designer shoes, handbags, watches and sunglasses. The sunglasses had to be Ray Ban, the wallet Prada, and the watch a bright coloured Toy Watch.
A JB Hi-Fi regional manager, Craig Pearce, said the price of televisions had dropped over the past year and he expected demand to be high from today when all stores opened.
He said the pre-Christmas shopping rush had come late this year, but he was hopeful that it would continue for the rest of the week.
