Weird Words and Their Meanings

Weird Words and Their Meanings

While we all realize the importance of proper utilization of the English language to portray our education and intelligence, it is also exciting to explore the many weird words and their meanings that have held a place in normal conversations of the past. Even though many of these words are now obsolete, they can provide a fun method of starting a conversation. And who knows, some of them may even enjoy a comeback in our everyday language.

You may cause some raised eyebrows when you tell the family you will be serving Galimaufrey for supper tonight. This sounds much more interesting than the real meaning, which is leftovers, or throw-togethers. Of course, when they see what you are actually serving they may come down with a case of the Mulligrubs, which is a case of the blues or depression. If your presentation of the galimaufrey is not creative, they may only choose a small Moiety, or portion, leaving you with even more Groodles, or leftover food. They may also be clever enough to Defenestrate their moiety, or throw their portion out of the window, if they see you are not watching. Then they will soon be back to raid the refrigerator to assuage their hunger.

Make your friends do a double take when you tell them you are going to give them an Agnomen. They will not know it is just another name for a nickname. When you want to voice an insult to someone you do not like, confuse them by calling them a Pronk, which is a foolish person, or a Nidget, which is a coward or a fool. Unless you explain the meaning to them, it should not get you into too much trouble. They may be a little suspicious if you call them a Makebate, but it just means a person who causes trouble or strife.

The next time you go fishing, bait your hook with an Anglewitch, which is simply a worm. One weird word (snafu) that is still familiar to many people is actually an acronym for Situation Normal All Fouled Up. As you can see, there are some really weird words that are not just made up, they really do exist! So expand your vocabulary and have some fun.
